Tutu Design Competition Six Finalists ... Time for you to cast your vote!!

Thank you so much to all the people who submitted entries for this competition. We were overwhelmed by how creative people are and have become inspired by all of the different ideas presented. It was a difficult decision to pick the finalists as many designs were truly worthy ...

After a much debated discussion with an "expert" panel of judges (consisting of 3 family members plus myself) we have decided upon SIX finalists based on creativity, colour choice and Dianne's "ability" to recreate the design.

To cast your vote simply go to the right-hand column of this blog and click on the button next to your favourite tutu design followed by "Vote". (You are only able to vote once). Voting closes at 5.00 pm on the 28 June, 2010.

The finalists are listed below in no particular order ...

A classic regular length tutu made of alternating panels of tulle in the colours:

A combination of a light weight Denim overskirt on a very fluffy White tutu underneath. The denim overskirt would be finished off with maybe a stud or two, and two or three large safty pins for decoration down one side.

5. ICED VO VO

A classic regular length tutu made of alternating panels of:
Coconut and icing - Mixture of White and Baby Pink tulle
Rasberry jam - Wide pane of Garnet (dark pink) tulle

6. Heirloom - inspired by Tania Louise Logo
Designed by Tania H

An extra fluffy regular length tutu made of alternating Lime and Amethyst panels of tulle with the upper layers of tulle adorned by a colour coordinated tiny bead sewn near the base.

Are you a creative person, have lots of ideas or get inspired by things around you and LOVE tutus?? ... then this competition is for you!!

Over the next month Little Fish Creations is holding a CHILDREN'S TUTU DESIGN COMPETITION where you can submit your creative tutu design ideas for your chance to have your own design become a reality.

* * * COMPETITION RULES , CONDITIONS AND PRIZES * * *

Competition is open to Australian residents only. Please show your support of Little Fish Creations by becoming a blog follower (www.littlefishcreationsaustralia.blogspot.com), twitter follower (www.twitter.com/LittleFishCreat), or a facebook fan (www.facebook.com/LittleFishCreations).

Submissions can be in the form of:

* a written description of style and colours,
* a drawing,
* a photo of inspiration,
* a photo of materials or elements you might like to see incorporated into the tutu, or simply
* a costume idea of how you could use a tutu

... the list is endless.

You can submit your ideas in any format as long as you get your point across (but please do not send a photo of an existing tutu as this will defeat the purpose of you using your creative spirit).

There are over 40 tulle colours available for you to select from when constructing your design.

And you should also think of a suitable name for your design, e.g. Woodland (but I am sure you can be more creative).

Stage 1:
Submissions are to be emailed using the subject "TUTU DESIGN COMP" to dianne@littlefishcreations.com.au by the 14th June, 2010, at 5.00 pm (Eastern states). You are welcome to submit as many designs as you like, however, only one design from five different designers will be selected for the second stage of the competition.

Stage 2:
The five most unique entries will be further promoted on this blog for fans and followers to vote on. Final votes will close 28th June, 2010 at 5.00 pm (Eastern states) and the most popular tutu design will be announced on this blog and at www.facebook.com/LittleFishCreations shortly thereafter. The winner will also be contacted by email.

The winner of the most popular design will receive a tutu (child size only) made to reflect their design as best to Dianne's ability. This tutu will then be promoted using the design name given by the designer, along with the designer's name and made available for purchase exclusively at www.madeit.com.au/LittleFishCreations. There will also be two runners up prizes ... a $20 gift voucher each to spend on any item (custom or ready made) at http://www.littlefishcreations.com.au/.

So start thinking about what colours you love, look at everything around you and draw upon inspiration from your surroundings ... I am looking forward to seeing how clever everyone is and I think this competiton will be lots of fun!!

Paper Butterfly Mobile ...

I posted this hand cut double sided paper butterfly mobile to Corinne in ACT for her daughter's room. The combination of paper colours used were dark pinks, medium pinks, pale pinks, plus oranges, yellows and creams. This is the large size mobile, and has 17 strands of butterflies hanging from a painted white timber frame. I can also make a smaller version with only 9 strands of butterflies. Each strand comprises of three different sized butterflies and no two strands will have the same combination of papers.

Well we did it ... Little Fish Creations had their very first market at Allies Attic.

Although the day was hindered a little by the bad weather, a steady stream of people filled the hall. I made these two sets of bunting flags for Holly and Abbey, sisters that live in Queensland. They were custom orders ... Holly's flags were designed to compliment a Kaz Kids "Fly away birdie" quilt cover set ...

Abigail's nursery ... a work in progress

In the three days last week that both my husband Daniel and I had off work while Jessica and Abby went to daycare, we managed to transform our 3rd bedroom into a little girls room. Over the past 7 years this room had been used as a study, a lounge room, a guest bedroom, then a study again ... while during most of this it always collected junk and never had a true owner.

For the past year since Abigail had been born we had always intended for this room to be hers. And now after a few patches here and there and a new coat of paint we could finally give our little girl a room of her very own. Abigail's middle name is Violet so purple is the inspiration for the accents in her room (on a pale neutral background with white furniture). There are more things that I plan to make for her room but the photos below show just a few of my creations ...

After visiting the Handmade Kids website the other day I noticed that they had a section on their website of images from their very own Aussie Handmade Kids group pool on FLICKR - so I joined the pool and uploaded some of my favourite images of Jessica and Abigail in various tutus that I have made. To my surprise, out of the ten images randomly featured in this FLICKR section on the Handmade Kids website, 5 of my tutus are being featured. How cool is that!!! On holidays ... but still made a tutu

My family and I have left the big smoke and are staying in Taree, NSW for a week or so over the Christmas break to visit my and my husband's families. Just before we left a new box of tulle arrived and I couldn't resist to take a few rolls of tulle with me on our holiday. I call the tutu below a "party" tutu as it leaves behind the reds and greens of Christmas and brings some different colours into the pallette of what is left of the Australian summer. I have used "French blue" and "Garnet" tulle evenly dispersed and have made the skirt length a little shorter for summer, whilst making the skirt have a little bit more body (or fluff). You will notice Jessica is modelling this one which demonstrates that although the tutus are sized, there is still a bit of give in them for older children. My daughters had their day care Christmas party the other day and thought what better place to advertise my tutus than a place filled with children under the age of five. Jessica was dressed as a Christmas present and Abigail was dressed as a Christmas tree ... well, that was the idea at least!! The red tutu is my classic design. The kelly green tutu is best described as a "fluffy butt" tutu as it is a lot shorter and gives a very cute fluffy bum effect.

Here is another Christmas inspired tutu ... using alternating red and kelly green tulle. I just love how this has turned out and Abigail looks so cute (especially the first photo!). I made the tutu a little shorter and more fluffy (20% more tulle) than my regular tutus. I have just finished making another two tutus for identical twin girls who live here in Sydney, Chloe and Helayna-Lily. They are not quite 4 years old yet but like my eldest daughter Jessica who is 3 1/2, they know what they like. The girls' mum told them that she was ordering a tutu for them for Christmas. She showed them them the tulle colour chart and asked them to pick colours that they liked. Chloe expressed that she liked bright green and purple, where as Lily wanted a yellow tutu. Unfortunately I only had one roll of "butter" pale yellow tulle and I was not able to get anymore yellow until well after Christmas, but after talking to Lily, it was possible to introduce other colours as well. After looking at the finished result ... it is hard to believe that these two tutus came from two individuals who could have been just one as the tutus are sooooooooo different. I must commend Krissy (Mum) for encouraging the girls to find their own personality, ... their own identity ... and fostering this even at such a young age.

While I was photographing my tutus yesterday I thought of this idea. I have seen this before but what a great idea!!! This is a regular length tutu (eggplant) worn over a longer tutu (emerald) to create a double layer effect.

Here are two more tutus that I finished and sent off yesterday. The light blue tutu was sent to a little girl in Seven Hills, Queensland and the eggplant is a present for a little girl who lives in Scotland but is visiting Sydney for 6 weeks.

The idea of the diamante clasp was a request from the customer. Other clasp shapes available are circle and heart. From this we (the customer and I) have developed the idea of an "Elegant" tutu range which will all feature a diamante clasp and possibly black velvet or satin ribbon ... stay tuned!!!

You will also notice that I have invested in a mannequin form due to my own kids either my own kids being unwilling or unavailable to pose for photos every second day. I bought the form from Rax and Dollies in Surry Hills NSW (http://www.raxanddollies.com.au/) - a husband and wife team and they are extremely nice people to deal with.

Here is another box of tulle that arrived from the USA yesterday. This one has black, red, garnet (extremely hot pink), amethyst, emerald green, eggplant, french blue, baby pink and wisteria. I am still taking orders for pre-Christmas delivery so please contact me asap if you are interest in placing an order. I have enough tulle to make 3-4 years tutus in all colours at this stage (except french blue - size 1-2 years biggest size if solid colour used).

Here is my latest creation ... and it is a little different from my usual tutus. It is quite a bit longer than the usual design (about 7 cm) and it has two long lengths of bright green (with white spots) grosgrain ribbon stitched to the elastic making it an open tutu. The ribbon is plain green on the other side so you can wear the tutu both ways. The openess of the tutu (and elastic waist)allows it to fit children of all ages upwards of 3 years old. The original idea of this tutu skirt was that the tutu in emerald green represented a Christmas tree, with a star situated above (for. e.g. on singlet as shown in the photo below. I guess you could further dress this "tree" up by hanging a few bells, or mini baubels on ribbon from the waistband.

Since making this I have thought of a number of other costume applications for such a tutu. You could use this tutu as the skirt for a hula girl, woodland fairy, pixie ... hmmm ... have camera will have to take some photos ... stay tuned!!!

Also, do you like the top featured in this photo? I simply made this using a white Bonds singlet, cut a large star shape from some red felt and stitiched it on with two rows of stitiching inside the star's edge - a pretty cool attempt to whip something up in 5 min so that I could take a photo ... lucky I had my sewing machine out!!!

Shabby chic bunting flags - perfect for a summer tea party ...

Beautiful bunting, pennant strings, fabric flags ... whatever you like to call them ... they are perfect for adding a splash of colour to any girl's bedroom, nursery, playroom or cubby house, and can be used as a party decoration for tea or garden parties.

The original set of these flags were made for my eldest daughter's (Jessica's) room (see photos). Her room is largely pink and white with the odd splash of red so I thought this fabric combination would be perfect. The nine double-sided flags consist of a repeat of four different fabrics - shabby-chic floral on white background, bright pink vintage floral, red, pink and green spots on white background, dark pink and white small checks - all strung/sewn together with bright red poplin.

My tulle supplies seem to be running quite low at the moment but I have placed 2 orders for some more tulle to be shipped from the US. I have ordered: black, red, emerald, kelly green, amethyst, eggplant, garnet, french blue, wisteria and baby pink. I can't wait until these rolls arrive as I have some pre-orders for some great colour combinations. Hopefully they will be made in time for Christmas.

This is Gabrielle. She was given this "lavender" tutu to wear as part of her fairy costume at her 3rd birthday party. The theme of the party was "Fairies" and all of the kids did a great job of dressing up. Below are just some photos her mum took of her at her party. The other little girl in the photos is Annika (also 3 years old) and she is wearing a "coral" tutu. I think the girls look lovely ... and very cute (nice tutus!!)

It has been a day of tutus.

My tulle order arrived on Monday from the US on Monday (colours: lavender, deep purple, baby pink, paris pink, light blue, emerald, white and butter).

I received the Christmas edition of Real Living Magazine last week and the colours of its cover inspired me to start thinking about Christmas. With less than two months until Christmas I thought I should start early this year. And now having two kids ... I thought our decorations should be a little more playful than the red, purply plum and gold baubles that we usually use to decorate our tree. This year Christmas we be red, white and blue at the Fisher household!!!

And this morning I finally made a trip to Spotlight ...

With felt, rik rak, ribbon and two papier mache reindeers ... I wonder what I will make?

Where it all began ... with paper

Little Fish Creations stemmed from a desire to undertake craft projects and decorating Jessica's (my eldest daughter) room on a tight budget. I first dabbled with painting a few items such as letters to spell out her name ... and then I discovered japanese paper.

One day I had an idea to fold some paper cranes for a bay window display in Jessica's room. These little darlings use to hang in flight in strips ... but now they have well and truly landed ... and unfortunately have been replaced with something else (but I still think they are beautiful).

My next paper idea involved cutting out by hand butterflies and framing them ... and I included the quote by Hans Christian Anderson:

"Just living is not enough" said the butterfly,
"one must have sunshine, freedom and a little flower."
